Pain During Pregnancy
More than half of all females experience some type of pain during pregnancy. Women experience many changes including postural imbalance caused by increased weight in front of the body, increased amounts of maternal hormones, and laxity of cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. These changes can lead to back pain, pelvic pain, difficulty breathing, rib pain, and numbness and tingling in the arms and hands. Physical Therapy can help by developing a specific program including stretches, postural awareness, gentle strengthening exercises, massage or soft tissue techniques, joint mobilization, fitting of support belts, and providing tips for home and work.

Urinary Incontinence
Urinary Incontinence is a condition in which involuntary loss of urine is a social or hygienic problem. Different types of incontinence include involuntary loss of urine with physical exertion and/or involuntary loss of urine and a strong desire to void. An estimated 13 million people are affected by incontinence. If left untreated it can lead to depression, decreased job opportunities, social isolation, and decreased sexual activity. You may have tried Kegel exercises and/or medications. Physical therapy can help by supplementing what you're already doing and by teaching you ways to manage and control your symptoms. Biofeedback training, exercises, relaxation techniques, and education regarding your particular symptoms will allow you to gain control.
What is Biofeedback?
Biofeedback is a painless method of monitoring the electrical activity of your pelvic floor muscles using a computerized system which allows you to view the quality and quantity of your pelvic floor contraction. Because the pelvic floor muscle group is not easily visualized, many individuals have poor awareness of these muscles and how to effectively strengthen them. This often leads to frustration, causing many to stop their exercise program. Because biofeedback training provides instant feedback on the strength and endurance of your muscle contraction, you learn to do a proper and effective pelvic floor contraction. This is the same technology elite athletes employ to gain strength and control.

Pelvic Pain
This is a condition with various causes. Tension in the muscles of the pelvic floor, scars from childbirth, poor pelvic alignment, and weak muscles supporting the pelvis are a few. If you experience pain with sitting, urination, intercourse, or numbness and tingling in the vaginal region you may be experiencing pelvic pain. Physical therapy can help through education, exercises, ultrasound, massage, and other treatment options to provide you with pain relief and a program designed specifically to treat your needs.
